Drawing 2d in 3d drawaing
If you want to draw 2d line with the current "elevation" (usually 0.00), just go to "Options" dialog box and check box "Replace Z value with current elevation" in "Drafting" tab. You can snap to any 3d object in the drawing, but the line will be drawn on the current "elevation".

2 Quick Tips for Improving Performance in Civil 3D
Here's 2 quick tips from: http://www.cadapult-software.com
There are many different tips and tricks for improving performance in AutoCAD Civil 3D. This tutorial will cover two of the most important ones that you can implement quickly and easily.
Set PROXYGRAPHICS to 0. PROXYGRAPHICS is a drawing variable that specifies whether to save proxy graphic images of objects that can not be displayed by basic AutoCAD. In Civil 3D this means that if PROXYGRAPHICS is on (set to 1) then you are saving images of surfaces, points, alignments, and all other Civil 3D objects. This results in much larger drawings and decreases in performance.
If you do need to share drawings with AutoCAD users, consider having them install the Object Enabler so they can view the objects natively or using the Export to AutoCAD option, which explodes AutoCAD Civil 3D objects to AutoCAD primitives.
PROXYGRAPHICS is a drawing based variable so it needs to be set in each drawing. You should also set it in your drawing template so that new drawings are created with the variable set properly.
Set LAYOUTREGENCTL to 0 or 1, but not 2. LAYOUTREGENCTL is a system variable that controls the caching of the Layouts in your drawing.
If set to 0, the drawing is regenerated each time you switch layouts.
If set to 1, the Model tab and the last Layout made current are cached.
If set to 2, all Layouts and the Model tab are cached.
Caching the Layouts does prevent a regen when you switch between tabs. However, it also uses up precious system resources that Civil 3D can use to improve performance and stability.
LAYOUTREGENCTL is a system variable so you only need to set it once on each computer in your office.

2009 Created IT drawings
We've recently had several IT drawings created in 2009 Land Desktop to be xref'd into our Civil3D design drawings. Found errors in IT, updated them and saved to Civil3D 2010. After the save, the xref lost the ability to show all points in the drawing.
Raisa found two fixes:
1. Open in 2009 Land Desktop and explode and xref the exploded drawing as dumb text-this is a temporary quick fix.
2. Convert points to 2010 Civil3D, which involves updating styles and such, which we have not done yet in survey department. Will need to complete sometime soon.
Any other fixes solutions?

When I click on the view/edit corridor section, all of the traget points have a huge label and I am unable to see where my proposed surface is. This seems like a simple fix, however I have been unable to find where to turn the markers off or make them smaller. And this has never happened on previous jobs, so I am a bit perplexed. If you have an answer, please email me.
thanks,
Jeremy

Must See Webinars
Check out these webinars (two of the three are viewable - the third is yet to come and deals with the municipal aspects that we just did our municipal strategic planning about)
I watched most of the utility presentation today and we are about to provide a good piece of what Burns McDonnel offers their customers to WE Energies.
THIS IS THE DIRECTION OF THE INDUSTRY. We are not dreaming this stuff up. Watch these over a lunch period and let your imagination go. If you think of a use, bring it and and lets discuss.

Online Library
For those that are not aware, I have started an "online library" on the D drive for all things Civil. Feel free to take a look and add things as you come across them. A lot of what I've learned about Civil is located in this folder.

Intersection Wizard
I'm working through the intersection wizard in some detail and it's not the smoothest process in the world. Just wanted to get a posting started for people to reply to and add comments regarding this issue.
Open Command
As one of the guiney pigs for C3D2010 with Windows 7 as 64-bit (W7-64), I have had 4 installs & Autodesk cannot solve my Cadd problem. The OPEN dialog box keeps reverting to "Desktop" as soon as I pick a drive letter. I can click on an existing dwg & C3D will open it. Then my problems reverts to the fact I can only save to "My documents" and not the project location. Super pain in the ass.
This has sort of slowed down out conversion to W7-64. We want the 64 bit OS so more memory is available to the application.

Welcome to the Kapur C3D Blog!!
Hopefully this can be a place for Kapur employees to ask questions, share tricks and tips and ultimately get the most out of our investment in Civil 3d 2010.
Blogging is obviously something new to Kapur.
Please give it a try and post your thoughts.
Lets start it of with a general question.
What type of problems are you experiencing working with C3D?
